Reports Show Restorative Justice Programs Prove Effective (San Quentin News)

9/12/2014

The August 2014 issue of the San Quentin News (www.SanQuentinNews.com) highlights a recent ABC News report that repeat offender numbers in Australia are down as much as 55 percent, thanks to restorative justice proceedings. Restorative justice entails mediated sessions between offenders and victims and/or friends and families of victims, to generate empathy and process the trauma of the crime.

The article also highlights Insight Prison Project's Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG) program inside San Quentin State Prison. The Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG) program supports incarcerated individuals in the process of understanding and developing insight into the underlying circumstances of their lives and the choices that led them to come to prison. The process utilizes a Restorative Justice philosophy to help individuals to address memories and feelings connected to traumatic and unresolved events in their lives in an effort to integrate these experiences into their lives and experience a renewed sense of wholeness, authenticity, emotional well being and positive behavior.

In order to foster empathy and process the pain of the crime, restorative justice involves mediated sessions between offenders and victims, as well as friends and family of the victims.

Restorative justice offers a compelling alternative to traditional punitive measures, focusing on rehabilitation and reconciliation rather than just punishment. The significant reduction in recidivism in Australia highlights its potential effectiveness. However, its success may vary depending on the crime and participants' willingness to engage. Could this model be expanded globally?

This excerpt from the San Quentin News is a compelling spotlight on the transformative potential of restorative justice, both abroad and within the walls of one of California’s most well-known prisons. It underscores how justice systems—when focused on healing and accountability instead of punishment alone—can genuinely reduce recidivism and support rehabilitation.

The article also talks about the Insight Prison Project's VOEG program at San Quentin State Prison. This program helps people who are incarcerated reflect on their past, understand the deeper reasons behind their actions, and work through the choices that led them to prison. It's really about personal growth, accountability, and healing.

That's a powerful piece—restorative justice often gets overlooked in conversations about criminal justice reform, but its impact can be profound, as the article shows. A 55% reduction in recidivism is no small thing, and it speaks to how deeply effective real accountability and healing can be when compared to purely punitive systems.
