5th Annual Fall Fundraising Dinner - "Beyond the Bars"
For over fifteen years, IPP has provided programs that foster insight and lasting behavioral change for prisoners in the California correctional system. IPP’s programs are conducted by community volunteers and crime survivors. They create a rare and effective response to our statewide prison crisis and to the needs of prisoners, parolees, crime survivors and community members.
This fall we are hosting our 5th Annual Fall Fundraiser, “Beyond the Bars,” to celebrate our efforts and to bring together a diverse group of allies and donors who understand that, with personal commitment, understanding, collaboration and the right tools, prisoners can leave our broken system without being broken themselves.

Steve Hawkins is a social justice leader and currently the Executive Director of Amnesty International USA. Steve graduated from New York University School of Law and became an attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund where he represented African American men throughout the Deep South who faced the death penalty. He investigated and brought litigation that saved the lives and led to the release of three Black teenagers wrongfully convicted in Tennessee. Steve has also held the positions of Executive Vice President and Chief Program Officer of the NAACP, Senior Program Manager at Justice, Equality, Human Dignity and Tolerance Foundation, and Program Executive at Atlantic Philanthropies. He was also the Director of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty where he successfully campaigned to abolish death sentences for juvenile crimes. He has been at the helm of Amnesty International USA since September 2013. Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning grassroots activist organization with more than 3 million members in more than 150 countries campaigning for human rights worldwide.

Justice in the Arts Award Winner - Leslie Neale
Leslie Neale and her films are recognized for their impact on social justice. Her award-winning film Road to Return, narrated by Tim Robbins, was presented to the United States Congress, prompting a bill authorizing $6 million dollars for prison aftercare. Juvies, narrated by Mark Wahlberg, toured the world as one of the top ten “Human Rights Watch” films of 2005. Juvies also screened at the United Nations, encouraging the first ever conference on juvenile justice, won many awards, and aired on HBO. Her films encourage in-depth examination of these topics with an uncommon sensitivity. Insight Prison Project is humbled and honored that Leslie's latest powerful film features the work of IPP and we are proud to present her with this year's Justice in the Arts Award.
